Referral information

Referral information

The FRS (Newcastle Region) will provide information and referral about location, purpose and availability of local and regional community services in the Hunter and Central Coast regions of NSW by telephone. Three levels of referral will be provided – simple, supported and complex.

SIMPLE REFERRAL: callers will be provided with contact details of appropriate services.

Designed to assist:

  • Callers from agencies
  • Child Wellbeing Units
  • children and families

SUPPORTED REFERRAL: callers will be provided with a supported referral facilitated by Family Referral Workers.

Designed to assist children, young people and families who need help to contact services because:

  • they are in crisis or distressed
  • they need assistance to make contact with an appropriate service.

In this case Family Referral Workers will plan a referral pathway and contact the most suitable agency to ascertain their availability and willingness to assist the caller.

A three way call including the child or family is likely to assist the caller to make contact with the agency.

COMPLEX REFERRAL: callers will receive a supported referral (as above) and will be followed up by an augmented Family Referral Worker.

The augmented Family Referral Worker will coordinate a referral plan to ensure the referral was successful and to identify any further referrals required.

Designed to assist:

  • children, young people and families with multiple or complex referral needs
  • children, young people and families who need assistance to make contact with appropriate services.
Augmented Family Referral Workers will not engage in counselling or case work with people requiring complex referrals other than to make a thorough assessment of their needs and to help to ensure referrals made are taken up by both the caller and the service referred to.
