There are many other people affected by adoption – siblings, partners of adopted people and partners of birth parents.

Siblings

There are two main groups of siblings for the purposes of post-adoption legislation:

  • Birth siblings who were placed for adoption into different adoptive families
  • Non-adopted siblings of an adoptee who were raised within their birth family

See the Information Sheet ‘Siblings and adoption’ below for more information.

Partners of adopted people

Partners of adopted people may experience a range of emotions as their partner searches for and is reunited with their birth relatives. See the Information Sheet ‘Partners of adoptees’ below for more information.

Partners of birth parents

Partners of birth parents – often men but sometimes women – can be impacted at various stages in the search and reunion process. See the Information Sheet ‘Partners of birth parents’ below for more details.
